Telstra fined $18M for secretly downgrading 9,000 customers’ NBN speeds without consent.
Telstra has been fined $18 million by Australia’s Federal Court for switching nearly 9,000 Belong customers to a lower-speed NBN plan in late 2020 without informing them.
The change reduced upload speeds from 40 Mbps to 20 Mbps while keeping download speeds at 100 Mbps, affecting service quality without customer consent.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said this violated consumer law by depriving customers of the right to decide if the service met their needs.
Telstra must pay over $2.3 million in $15 monthly compensation per affected customer and cover the ACCC’s legal costs.
The court ruling, issued in February 2025, highlights regulatory scrutiny of transparency in telecom services.
