South Africa's top court upheld President Ramaphosa's appointment of an acting police minister, rejecting a challenge by Zuma and the MK Party.
South Africa’s Constitutional Court dismissed a challenge by the MK Party and former president Jacob Zuma over President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to place Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on special leave and appoint Firoz Cachalia as acting minister. The court ruled unanimously that the applicants failed to justify bypassing the High Court, which has jurisdiction over such disputes. It emphasized that constitutional challenges involving the president’s conduct must follow proper legal procedures, and the importance of a case alone does not allow direct access to the Constitutional Court. The court also found no grounds to invalidate the acting appointment or a commission of inquiry. Each party will bear its own costs. The MK Party and Zuma have not yet responded.
