A South African ex-official falsified deaths to steal insurance, affecting living people, and faces sentencing in 2026.
Dawn Celeste Pieterson, a former South African Home Affairs employee, was convicted on nine fraud charges and two violations of the Birth and Death Registration Act for falsely declaring at least nine people dead between 2019 and 2022.
Using her access to the national population register, she manipulated death records to claim funeral insurance benefits, causing major disruptions in victims’ lives despite them being alive.
The case, which highlights vulnerabilities in government identity systems, is set for sentencing on 26 January 2026.
