Six Australian women and children escaped from Syria’s al-Hol camp, traveled through Lebanon, and returned home after security checks.
Six Australian women and children, including minors, have returned to Australia after escaping from Syria’s al-Hol camp and traveling through Lebanon, where they were detained for lacking visas.
The group, part of about 40 Australians still in Syrian camps, reportedly made the journey without government assistance.
Australian authorities confirmed their return, conducted security and DNA checks, and issued passports through Lebanese officials.
The government has not confirmed plans to assist others who may attempt similar escapes, citing ongoing security risks and the dangers of travel to Syria.
