Russian dissident publisher Georgy Urushadze wins U.S. freedom-of-expression award for anti-war books.
The Association of American Publishers has awarded its International Freedom to Publish Award to Freedom Letters, a Russian dissident press founded by Georgy Urushadze after he fled Russia in 2022 for opposing the war in Ukraine.
Based in Ukraine, Latvia, and Georgia, the publisher, run by volunteers, has released hundreds of anti-war and pro-democracy works in Russian and Ukrainian, including a collection of statements from political prisoners and a graphic novel diary of the war.
Banned in Russia, the press continues to distribute books online despite authors facing criminal charges.
The award honors Urushadze’s courage and dedication to free expression under repression.
