A Rolex worn by the first British woman to swim the English Channel is auctioned in Geneva, valued at $1 million.
A Rolex Oyster watch worn by Mercedes Gleitze, the first British woman to swim the English Channel, is set for auction at Sotheby’s in Geneva on November 9 with an estimated value of one million Swiss francs.
Gleitze’s 1927 swim was initially disputed, leading to a second attempt on October 21, 1927, which she abandoned after over 10 hours due to rough seas.
Rolex used the event to test its newly patented waterproof watch, which survived the submersion and helped establish the Oyster’s reputation for durability.
The inscribed timepiece, considered one of the most significant wristwatches in private hands, marks its first public auction in 25 years.
The sale coincides with renewed interest in Gleitze’s story, highlighted by the 2024 film *Vindication Swim*.
