Nigeria plans single-day elections by 2027 to cut costs and boost credibility.
Nigeria’s National Assembly is advancing plans to hold all national and state elections—presidential, gubernatorial, and legislative—on a single day by 2027, aiming to boost efficiency, reduce costs by an estimated 40%, and improve election credibility.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas confirmed the move during talks with the European Union, highlighting proposed reforms including reserved seats for women and persons with disabilities, greater financial autonomy for the electoral body INEC, and clearer roles for traditional rulers.
The reforms are under review ahead of a vote this month, with officials warning delays could hinder preparations for the 2027 polls.
