New Zealand's Environment Court approved a 35-year expansion of Northport at Marsden Point to boost freight capacity and create 1,500 jobs.
The Environment Court has approved Northport’s 35-year expansion at Marsden Point, allowing development of a container handling and logistics facility to meet rising freight demand in the Upper North Island.
The decision, following over a decade of planning and two-thirds support from 228 submissions, aims to boost economic growth, supply chain resilience, and regional development.
The project could generate around 1,500 new jobs in Northland.
Implementation timing will be determined by Northport’s board, while CEO Jon Moore prepares to retire after 19 years leading the port.
