A new exhibition at Howard University, “Temples of Hope, Rituals of Survival: Gordon Parks and Black Religious Life,” opens October 2, 2025, showcasing over 40 photographs and artifacts from the late photographer’s career.
The display, running through December 1, highlights Parks’ intimate documentation of Black religious life, including the Black church, the Nation of Islam, and spiritual practices, drawn from a 2022 acquisition of 244 images by Howard’s Moorland-Spingarn Research Center.
Curated by professor Melanee C. Harvey, the exhibit features rare candid moments of Rev.
Ernest Franklin Ledbetter Sr., Beatrice Williams, and Malcolm X, reflecting Parks’ humanistic approach and commitment to capturing the dignity and resilience of African American communities through visual storytelling.
