Myanmar's military says it recaptured Kyaukme from rebels, a move unverified due to access restrictions.
Myanmar’s military claims to have recaptured Kyaukme, a strategic town in northern Shan State, from the Ta’ang National Liberation Army after a three-week operation, restoring control on Wednesday.
The town, on a major trade route to China, had been under rebel control since August 2024.
State media published images of soldiers at administrative sites, citing efforts to return displaced residents.
The TNLA has not commented but accused the military of heavy airstrikes and attacks in surrounding villages.
The advance follows China-brokered ceasefires that slowed rebel gains, allowing the military to retake Lashio and Nawnghkio earlier this year.
The operation comes ahead of planned elections starting December 28.
The claims cannot be independently verified due to restricted access.
