Māori kiwifruit growers launch a UAE export pilot, marking a new chapter in NZ-UAE trade and Indigenous economic cooperation.
Māori kiwifruit growers in New Zealand are launching a pilot export initiative in the United Arab Emirates, marking the first test of a new Indigenous economic cooperation chapter in the NZ-UAE trade agreement. Led by Māori Kiwifruit Growers Ltd, the project involves shipping 10 containers of fruit through a partnership with Zespri and Mr Apple, with proceeds reinvested in Māori grower training. The launch, supported by the Māori Queen and held in Dubai, emphasizes cultural branding, economic sovereignty, and intergenerational growth. MKGL, representing about 50 growers responsible for roughly 8% of New Zealand’s kiwifruit, is a finalist in New Zealand’s 2025 Māori Excellence in Export Awards.
