Mexican biologist survives 13-foot shark bite off Costa Rica, rescued after 36 hours.
Mexican marine biologist Dr. Mauricio Hoyos survived a shark attack on September 27, 2025, near Cocos Island National Park off Costa Rica’s coast while tagging marine species for the One Ocean Worldwide Coalition.
He was bitten on the head, face, and arms by a Galapagos shark estimated at 13 feet long, but the shark released him almost immediately, likely due to the resistance of his skull.
Rescuers took 36 hours to transport him from the remote island—about 340 miles offshore—to a hospital in San José, where he arrived in stable condition.
Costa Rica’s Fire Department and the For The Oceans Foundation commended the emergency response and recognized Hoyos’ contributions to shark conservation and ocean research.
