A Kansas jail officer faces murder charges after kneeling on a sick inmate’s back, leading to his death in July 2025.
A Wyandotte County detention officer, Richard Fatherley, has been charged with second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter in the July 5, 2025, death of Charles Adair, 50, who died in custody at the Wyandotte County Jail.
Court documents and a Kansas Bureau of Investigation affidavit detail that Fatherley knelt on Adair’s back and shoulder for nearly 90 seconds during a restraint incident after Adair became uncooperative following medical treatment for an infected leg.
Adair, who had untreated diabetes and other serious health conditions, was unresponsive when found by medical staff and pronounced dead at 9:19 p.m. An autopsy listed mechanical asphyxia as the cause of death, with contributing factors including heart disease, liver cirrhosis, and diabetes.
The incident, captured on video, has drawn public scrutiny, with calls for transparency and accountability.
Fatherley, 32, has not been arrested and is scheduled to appear in court on November 18.
