India has launched its first direct air cargo flight from Goa to Antarctica, carrying 18 tonnes of supplies including scientific equipment, medicines, and provisions for research stations Bharati and Maitri.
Operated by DROMLAN using an IL-76 aircraft from Manohar International Airport, the flight routed through Cape Town, South Africa, and was supported by GMR Aero Cargo, Alpha Crux, and Ultima Antarctic Logistics.
The mission, managed by NCPOR under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, marks a major step in India’s self-reliance for polar logistics, improving efficiency for ongoing climate, glaciology, and oceanography research.
