The EU is finalizing its 2026 particle physics strategy, evaluating future colliders without choosing a path.
The 2026 European Strategy for Particle Physics is nearing its final stage with the release of the Physics Briefing Book on October 2, 2025.
Compiled by CERN’s Physics Preparatory Group, it synthesizes input from 266 submissions and a June 2025 symposium with over 600 physicists from nearly 40 countries.
The document evaluates future collider projects, including an electron–positron collider for Higgs studies and a future energy-frontier collider, assessing scientific potential, costs, risks, and timelines without recommending a single path.
Final national input is due November 14, and an assessment of major projects will be released October 17.
The European Strategy Group will draft final recommendations in a December meeting in Ascona, Switzerland, with presentations to the CERN Council in March 2026 and a follow-up discussion in Budapest in May.
