Edinburgh approves £69M retrofit of 1960s housing for better safety, energy efficiency, and sustainability.
The City of Edinburgh Council has approved a £69 million retrofit of two Category A-listed 1960s housing blocks in Leith, Cables Wynd House and Linksview House, which together provide 310 social rented apartments.
The project, led by the council with input from architects and consultants, aims to improve energy efficiency to meet EESSH2 standards, enhance fire safety with sprinklers and a fire-fighting lift, and upgrade access, lighting, and waste systems.
Landscape updates include play areas, wildflower meadows, and sustainable drainage.
Residents helped shape the plans, and officials say the work balances heritage preservation with modernization for safer, more sustainable living.
