A provincial homeless count in British Columbia found 12 of 20 communities reported increases in homelessness in 2025, including Port Alberni, Williams Lake, and Squamish, while eight saw declines, such as Vernon and the Comox Valley. The counts, conducted in April and March, are snapshots over 24 hours and likely underrepresent actual numbers. Across all areas, 59% of respondents cited eviction as the cause of their most recent homelessness, a first for the province. Indigenous people and former foster-care youth remain overrepresented. The B.C. government attributes progress in some areas to its Belonging in B.C. plan but acknowledges ongoing challenges in addressing housing insecurity.
