A 23-year-old woman died from cancer after her mother, a former nurse and conspiracy theorist, discouraged chemotherapy and promoted unproven treatments.
Paloma Shemirani, 23, died in July 2024 from non-Hodgkin lymphoma after refusing chemotherapy and following an alternative treatment plan promoted by her mother, Kate Shemirani, a former nurse and conspiracy theorist.
The Kent and Medway Coroner’s Court concluded the mother’s influence “more than minimally” contributed to her death, citing efforts to undermine medical diagnoses and promote unproven therapies like daily coffee enemas.
Doctors had estimated an 80% chance of recovery with chemotherapy, and the coroner stated Paloma likely would have survived if supported in choosing treatment.
The mother, previously struck off for spreading Covid-19 misinformation, claimed her daughter was “well” the day she collapsed, a claim the coroner called “egregious.” Paloma’s twin brother blamed social services, police, and the coroner for failing to intervene.
