Two Vietnamese police officials accused of assaulting women in Wellington won’t face charges due to failed extradition efforts.
Two Vietnamese officials accused of sexually assaulting two female restaurant workers in Wellington in March 2024 will not face charges after New Zealand’s extradition request failed due to the lack of a treaty with Vietnam, requiring voluntary cooperation that was not granted.
The men, linked to Vietnam’s police force and present during Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính’s visit, allegedly assaulted the women in a private karaoke room, with one victim reporting forced alcohol consumption and injuries.
New Zealand police confirmed their belief in the assault and said they would have prosecuted if the suspects had stayed, but no explanation has been given for Vietnam’s refusal.
The case remains open, and New Zealand has formally raised concerns with Hanoi, which has not responded.
