Ten years after officer Curtis Cheng’s 2015 killing, Australia’s terror threat level was raised to “probable” in 2024 due to rising ideological violence.
Ten years after unarmed police officer Curtis Cheng was killed in a 2015 terrorist attack outside NSW Police headquarters, NSW’s top anti-terrorism officer, Deputy Commissioner David Hudson, said the threat landscape has grown more complex, shifting from groups like ISIS to a broader mix of ideologies.
In 2024, Australia’s intelligence agency ASIO raised the terror threat level to “probable” after eight incidents in four months, including the April Wakeley church stabbing.
Hudson emphasized that actions, not rhetoric, are the primary focus, and while neo-Nazi groups like the National Socialist Network are monitored, they are not officially designated as terrorist organizations.
Cheng’s son delivered a tribute urging remembrance of his father’s legacy over the violence that took his life.
