15 states accuse major tech firms of misleading green claims via renewable energy certificates.
Wyoming, Montana, and 14 other conservative-leaning state attorneys general have accused Amazon, Google, Meta, and Microsoft of greenwashing by using renewable energy certificates (RECs) to falsely claim clean energy usage.
In a September 24 letter, they argue RECs do not equate to actual renewable energy consumption and may harm grid reliability by encouraging early retirements of fossil fuel plants.
The states demand detailed responses by October 27 on energy sourcing and sustainability claims.
Amazon said its REC use is temporary and helps drive clean energy demand, while Google and Meta did not respond.
Experts suggest the states’ concerns may reflect political support for fossil fuels rather than environmental integrity.
