Papua New Guinea and Australia signed a mutual defence treaty, boosting their security alliance.
Papua New Guinea has approved a mutual defence treaty with Australia, known as the PukPuk agreement, clearing the final hurdle after a delay caused by scheduling conflicts during its independence celebrations.
The treaty, which commits both nations to assist each other in case of armed attack, marks a major upgrade in their security relationship, elevating PNG to formal alliance status alongside the U.S. and New Zealand.
PNG Prime Minister James Marape cited the need to strengthen national security due to the country’s limited defence capabilities.
The agreement, now ratified with an absolute majority in the cabinet, allows for joint military cooperation and potential citizenship for defence personnel.
A formal signing is expected soon, possibly before Marape attends Australia’s NRL Grand Final.
