Owamni, the James Beard Award-winning Indigenous restaurant founded by chef Sean Sherman and operated by nonprofit NATIFS, will relocate to a larger space at the Guthrie Theater in downtown Minneapolis in spring 2026.
The move, which doubles the restaurant’s size, places it on the Mississippi River waterfront near St. Anthony Falls—a site of cultural significance to the Dakota people.
The new location aims to expand Owamni’s reach, support Indigenous food sovereignty, and strengthen community engagement.
The restaurant, meaning “falling water” in Dakota, earned national acclaim and generated $5.6 million in profit in 2024.
The Guthrie Theater and Sherman both praised the partnership for enhancing the riverfront and advancing cultural revitalization.
