A once-logged forest in Qinghai is now a protected reserve, helping preserve the Yangtze River’s watershed.
The Markog River forest in Qinghai Province, a 101,800-hectare high-altitude region at the headwaters of the Dadu River— a major tributary of China’s Yangtze River—has been transformed from a logging site into a protected ecological reserve.
Once heavily logged, with over 700,000 cubic meters of timber harvested between 1965 and 1998, the area shifted to conservation after Qinghai banned commercial logging in 1998.
Efforts to restore the ecosystem, including reforestation and stricter enforcement, have helped safeguard water quality and biodiversity in one of China’s most sensitive watershed regions.
