Oklahoma launches forensic audit of education department over alleged misuse of pandemic funds after superintendent’s resignation.
Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond has ordered a forensic audit of the Oklahoma State Department of Education, covering January 2023 to September 2025, following the resignation of Superintendent Ryan Walters.
The audit, prompted by reports of potential mismanagement, focuses on the use of federal pandemic relief funds, including non-educational purchases like Xboxes and refrigerators through the ClassWallet program.
Although the State Auditor & Inspector’s Office stated it had not received a formal request and learned of the move via press release, the investigation aims to assess financial accountability.
Walters resigned to lead the Teacher Freedom Alliance, and Governor Kevin Stitt appointed Lindel Fields as interim superintendent while pushing for a shift to gubernatorial appointments.
