New Zealand is speeding up flood control upgrades on the Waipaoa River, finishing by June 2026 to protect farmland from severe floods.
The final phase of New Zealand’s Waipaoa flood control upgrades is underway, accelerating completion to June 2026—four years ahead of the original 2030 target.
Funded with $27 million from the Crown, the $37 million project has upgraded 54km of stopbanks protecting 10,000 hectares of farmland.
Work focuses on strengthening sections near Patutahi and along the Waipaoa River, including stretches near Lavenham Bridge and Lavenham/Matawai Roads.
Once finished, the system will withstand a 100-year rain event and floods 40% larger than those from Cyclone Gabrielle.
Earthwork Solutions Limited is executing the work, with rock armouring to follow in 2026/27.
Temporary disruptions are expected.
