A Malawian man was fined over $1 million for stealing utility equipment and faces jail if he can't pay.
A 31-year-old scrap metal dealer in Malawi, Patrick Julius, was convicted for possessing stolen fibre wire and water meters belonging to ESCOM and the Southern Region Water Board, after police recovered the items from his home.
He pleaded guilty and was fined K500,000 and K400,000 respectively, with each fine carrying a 12-month prison sentence if unpaid.
The fines remain unpaid as of October 2, 2025.
Separately, a 45-year-old property manager was arrested for allegedly stealing fuel and batteries worth over K5 million from a construction site, with some items recovered and charges pending.
