A Liberian judge’s son resigned as magistrate after backlash over his unqualified appointment and alleged nepotism.
Willeyon U. Gbeisay, son of Chief Justice Yamie Gbeisay, has resigned as Associate Magistrate-Designate for the Paynesville Magisterial Court after public backlash over his lack of legal qualifications and allegations of nepotism.
President Joseph Boakai accepted the resignation on October 1, 2025.
Gbeisay, who had not yet graduated from the Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law, cited the need to focus on his studies and support judicial reforms.
The move followed criticism from judges and civil society groups concerned about fairness and integrity in Liberia’s judiciary.
