KMR and DOC are restoring 45 km of waterways in Kaipara Harbour to improve water quality, protect habitats, and boost resilience.
Kaipara Moana Remediation (KMR) has partnered with New Zealand’s Department of Conservation (DOC) to restore 45 kilometers of waterway margins in the Kaipara Harbour catchment.
The initiative supports landowners and community groups in planting native vegetation and managing weeds on fenced, DOC-adjacent land to reduce sediment runoff, improve water quality, and restore habitats for native species.
The project strengthens resilience to storms and flooding and protects ecologically significant areas like seagrass beds and estuarine wetlands, which are vital for the snapper fishery.
Funding and technical assistance are provided through KMR, advancing local-led conservation in the Auckland region.
