A hiker was bear-bitten in Idaho’s Fremont County but hiked out unassisted; officials warn of bear activity and advise precautions.

A hiker was bitten by a bear in Fremont County, Idaho, near Squirrel Creek on Tuesday afternoon while traveling alone on the South rim east of Ashton. The bear charged through thick timber in what officials believe was a defensive reaction to a surprise encounter. The man, injured but conscious, hiked out on his own for medical treatment. Idaho Fish and Game confirmed no further management actions are planned and has posted warning signs due to recent bear activity. Officials urge backcountry visitors to hike in groups of three or more, avoid dawn, dusk, and nighttime travel, make noise, stay clear of dense brush and food sources, and carry bear spray.
