The FRA demands SEPTA fix fire risks in aging Silverliner IV trains after five fires, but won’t force a shutdown.
The Federal Railroad Administration has ordered SEPTA to urgently address fire risks in its 50-year-old Silverliner IV railcars after five fires since February, requiring immediate inspections and fire protection upgrades on all 225 cars.
The NTSB called the fleet’s outdated design and maintenance practices an "immediate and unacceptable safety risk," recommending suspension until safety issues are resolved, though the FRA’s order does not mandate a halt.
SEPTA maintains the trains are safe, citing 40 mitigation measures and reduced service, but warns a full shutdown would cost $2 billion and cut service by two-thirds, a financial burden it cannot bear.
The NTSB has given SEPTA 30 days to respond to its recommendations.
