Fiji's former PM Bainimarama convicted of threatening a police chief in 2021; sentencing Oct. 14.
Former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama was found guilty by Fiji’s High Court on October 2, 2025, of making an unwarranted demand with menace against then-Acting Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu.
The court ruled that Bainimarama lacked legal authority to demand the dismissal of two police officers in 2021 and used threats to pressure Tudravu, violating constitutional limits on executive power.
The judge found the prosecution’s case proven beyond reasonable doubt, while former Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho was acquitted on two counts of abuse of office.
Sentencing is set for October 14, with a 30-day appeal window.
The maximum penalty for Bainimarama’s offense is 12 years in prison.
