A Chinese-built bridge over the Bizerte Canal in northern Tunisia, constructed by Sichuan Road and Bridge Group, is set to open in 2027, ending years of traffic congestion caused by the aging Bizerte Bascule Bridge, which frequently closes for ships.
The project, Tunisia’s largest infrastructure initiative, began in July 2024 and is progressing on schedule with 14% of foundation work complete.
It will connect both sides of the canal, eliminate lengthy detours, reduce travel time from Tunis’s airport to Bizerte to under two hours, and boost tourism and local economic development.
Chinese and Tunisian workers are collaborating on-site, and the bridge will introduce advanced construction and environmental technologies to Tunisia, with lasting benefits expected beyond completion.
