Canada has denied Marineland’s request to export its 30 remaining beluga whales to China’s Chimelong Ocean Kingdom, citing animal welfare concerns and a 2019 law banning the use of whales and dolphins in entertainment and captivity.
Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson stated the decision reflects the government’s stance that whales belong in the ocean, not in tanks for shows.
The move prevents the transfer of the belugas to a facility deemed unsuitable under Canada’s strict animal welfare standards.
Marineland expressed disappointment, calling the relocation the only viable option for the whales’ care amid financial struggles and the park’s closure in 2024.
Since 2019, 20 whales have died at the Niagara Falls facility.
The federal government emphasized it will not approve exports that perpetuate captivity or exploitation.
