17-year-old British para-athlete Maddie Down overcame a poor 100m run to achieve a personal best long jump of 5.04 meters at the World Championships in New Delhi, becoming the first British woman in the T38 category to clear five meters and finishing fifth.
Her teammate, Olivia Breen, a two-time Paralympic medallist, also set a personal best to finish fourth, narrowly missing a medal.
Both athletes, part of a British team of over 30 supported by sponsor Novuna, praised each other’s performances, with Breen highlighting Down’s potential.
Down, who has competed at the Paris Paralympics, called the experience in India—marked by cultural and environmental challenges—a valuable learning opportunity and expressed hope to grow the sport.
