Amazon to pay $2.5B in FTC settlement over deceptive Prime sign-ups and hard cancellations.
Amazon has agreed to a $2.5 billion settlement with the FTC over allegations it misled millions into signing up for Prime without consent and made canceling difficult.
The penalty includes a $1 billion fine and $1.5 billion in refunds for customers who signed up or tried to cancel between June 2019 and June 2025.
The company must now offer a clear way to decline Prime and simplify cancellation.
Refunds, up to $51 per person, will be issued automatically by December 25, 2025, with a claims process in 2026.
The FTC called the order historic, citing internal company terms like "unspoken cancer" to describe deceptive practices.
