Western Australia will offer free nasal flu spray to kids 2–12 to fight its worst flu season, aiming to boost low vaccination rates.
Western Australia is introducing a free nasal spray flu vaccine for children aged two to 12 to combat its worst flu season on record, with 17,000 kids visiting emergency departments and 25% of flu cases occurring in that age group.
The needle-free FluMist, approved by Australia’s health regulator, aims to boost vaccination rates, currently at just 23% for children under five.
The rollout, part of a $4.78 million investment for 130,000 doses, is expected before the 2026 flu season and follows similar plans in other states.
Health officials say the spray offers the same protection as injections, reduces fear in children, and could help lower hospitalizations and community spread.
New Zealand is also considering adopting the vaccine, though it remains pending approval.
Australia Occidental ofrecerá un aerosol nasal gratuito contra la gripe a los niños entre el 2 y el 12 para combatir su peor temporada de gripe, con el objetivo de aumentar las bajas tasas de vacunación.
