Singapore designates former Kandang Kerbau Hospital its 76th national monument, honoring its medical and historical legacy.
The former Kandang Kerbau Hospital in Singapore has been designated the nation’s 76th national monument, recognizing its role as a pioneering maternity facility since 1924.
Three original blocks on Hampshire Road, where over 1.2 million babies were born, including Singapore’s first conjoined twins and Asia’s first IVF baby, are preserved under the Preservation of Monuments Act.
The site, which served as the country’s sole government maternity hospital until 1997, is now home to the Land Transport Authority and hosts the “Architecture of Care” exhibition.
The designation, announced on October 1, 2025, honors its medical milestones, architectural significance, and enduring legacy in public health and social history.
