A rural researcher won a spot in Australia’s $2M Kosciuszko race after mistakenly buying raffle tickets meant for a horse entry.
Blake Palmer, a 32-year-old agricultural researcher from Narrabri, unexpectedly won a slot in the $2 million Kosciuszko race after buying raffle tickets at a Coonabarabran hotel, thinking he was entering a meat-tray draw.
Instead, he received tickets granting him a share in a horse running in the prestigious country-trained race at Randwick on October 18.
Unfamiliar with horse racing, he partnered with trainer Todd Payne and the horse Lisztomania, now preparing for a Sydney weekend that includes a pre-race dinner with owners.
While the race offers potential prize money, Palmer says the real reward is the once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The event draws strong regional interest, with other top contenders from Dubbo and Mudgee also in the field.
