flag Police and community members begin torch relay to support Special Olympics in New Zealand.

The Law Enforcement Torch Relay for the Special Olympics National Summer Games began in Whangarei on October 4, marking the start of a nationwide journey to raise awareness and support for the event. The Flame of Hope, lit in Christchurch on September 1, will be carried by police officers, athletes, and community members across New Zealand, including major cities, before arriving in Christchurch for the December 10–14 games. Over 1,200 athletes from 42 clubs will compete in 10 sports, supported by thousands of volunteers and families. Free public events, including the Opening Ceremony at Wolfbrook Arena, will be held, with tickets available online. The relay, now in its 40th year, aims to promote inclusion and community engagement, with the global program raising $1 billion this year.
