Oregon’s newborn screening saved 2-year-old Maisie by detecting MCAD deficiency at birth.
A newborn bloodspot screening program in Oregon has saved the life of 2-year-old Maisie, who was diagnosed with MCAD deficiency just days after birth.
The state-mandated test, performed within the first few days of life and repeated at 10 to 14 days, screens for over 45 serious but treatable conditions, including cystic fibrosis and sickle cell disease.
Processed by the Oregon State Public Health Laboratory, the program has screened more than 99% of newborns since its 1963 launch, enabling early treatment that prevents severe complications or death.
Health officials stress the importance of continued participation, noting the program’s proven success in improving infant health.
