Ontario increases juror pay to $120 daily starting Sept. 30, 2025, ending a 36-year-old pay freeze.
Ontario is raising juror pay to $120 per day starting September 30, 2025, effective from the first day of service, ending a decades-long pay structure unchanged since 1989.
The change, called “long overdue” by Attorney General Doug Downey, aims to reduce financial barriers and improve jury diversity.
Previously, jurors received no pay for the first 10 days, then $40 daily until day 50, and $100 thereafter.
Advocates say the increase will boost participation, especially among low-income and gig workers.
While Ontario’s new rate is a step toward fairness, experts note other provinces still pay less than minimum wage and call for nationwide reforms, including better mental health support for jurors.
