The New Annual arts festival in Newcastle drew over 4,000 people to the Ocean Baths for its free SOAK sunset concert series, featuring global pop violinist Joel Sunny, local acts like DUST, and DJs jaytee hazard and GNGR.
The event, running through October 5, also included Global Gathering on Beaumont Street with live cooking demos by chefs Brendan Pang and Emelia Jackson, performances from flamenco, Indigenous storytelling, Samoan dance, and the women-led Afrobeat group ILE ILU.
The festival coincided with the reopening of the expanded Newcastle Art Gallery, whose facade displays children’s animations inspired by First Nations artists.
Funded by state and regional grants, the festival highlights local talent and community creativity across public spaces.
