A new 600-meter flyover in East Auckland opened five months early, part of a busway project set to link East Auckland to the city center by 2027.
A 600-meter flyover named Rā Hihi has opened to citybound traffic in East Auckland, five months early and under budget, as part of the Eastern Busway project.
The structure links Pakūranga Road to Pakūranga Highway, carries four lanes, and supports a dedicated busway beneath it.
It will open in both directions later in October after intersection upgrades.
The busway, set to fully open by 2027, will connect East Auckland to the city center in about 40 minutes, integrating with the City Rail Link’s 2026 completion.
The project includes 7 kilometers of busway, 12 kilometers of walking and cycling paths, and five new stations, aiming to boost public transit use, reduce car dependency, and support regional growth with projected daily ridership of 18,000 by 2028 and 24,000 by 2048.
