A Navy worker falsely claimed an active shooter at a New Jersey base, causing a lockdown, and admitted fabricating it to feel included.
Malika Brittingham, a civilian Navy employee, was charged with falsely reporting an active shooter at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey on October 1, 2025, triggering a base-wide lockdown that lasted less than an hour.
According to a criminal complaint, she sent a text claiming she heard gunshots and was hiding, prompting emergency alerts and a shelter-in-place order.
Authorities found no evidence of a threat and determined her account was inconsistent, later learning she admitted to fabricating the incident to create a “trauma bond” with colleagues she felt excluded from.
Acting U.S. Attorney Alina Habba condemned the hoax as reckless and damaging to public trust, especially amid national tensions and recent military violence.
The base, one of the largest in the U.S., houses over 42,000 personnel and families.
Brittingham was taken into custody, and her legal representation remains unclear.
