Maine’s oil heating use dropped to a 15-year low, driven by heat pump adoption and energy efficiency efforts.
Maine’s heating oil reliance fell to 50.3% of households, the lowest in over 15 years, according to the American Community Survey, though it remains the most oil-dependent state.
The decline is linked to state efforts promoting heat pumps and energy efficiency, including surpassing the 2025 goal of 100,000 heat pumps two years early and aiming for 275,000 by 2027.
Electric heating use rose to 13.5% from 5.1% in 2010, while natural gas and propane use also increased.
