Julius Malema convicted on Oct. 1, 2025, for firing live rounds into crowd at 2018 rally; sentencing Jan. 23, 2026.
Julius Malema, leader of South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters, was convicted on October 1, 2025, of unlawfully discharging a firearm during a 2018 rally, where he fired 14 to 15 live rounds into the air in front of 20,000 supporters.
The East London Magistrate Court found him guilty on five charges, including firearm possession and reckless endangerment, with a maximum 15-year prison sentence possible.
His former bodyguard, Adriaan Snyman, was acquitted.
Malema claimed the gun was not his and fired it to energize the crowd, but the court rejected that defense.
The case, brought by AfriForum, follows a prior hate speech conviction.
Malema plans to appeal, calling the verdict politically motivated.
Sentencing is set for January 23, 2026.
