Ishmael Toroama wins Bougainville presidency in landslide, advancing push for independence by 2027.
Ishmael Toroama has been re-elected president of Bougainville in a landslide, with over 90,000 votes, reinforcing the region’s push for independence from Papua New Guinea.
His victory follows a 2019 referendum where 97.7% voted for self-determination, which he calls constitutionally binding.
Toroama pledged to pursue independence by 2027 through dialogue, including the Melanesian Relationship Agreement, while forming a caretaker government and excluding other parties from senior roles.
Though PNG Prime Minister James Marape congratulated him and affirmed support for peace and development, analysts note PNG’s historical resistance to full autonomy and limited parliamentary backing for independence.
