In 2024, ALONE, an Irish charity supporting older adults, assisted a record 44,000 individuals, driven by rising concerns over loneliness, housing, health, and financial hardship.
Loneliness was the top issue in the final quarter, with only half reporting visits from others, down from 70% in 2023, and 6% having no social contact in over a year.
Financial struggles affected 30%, particularly with energy bills, while nearly a third needed housing adaptations.
Physical health issues, including falls, also increased.
The charity’s integration with the HSE’s Enhanced Community Care programme expanded community support, and its volunteer base grew to 9,117, contributing over 264,000 hours.
ALONE CEO Sean Moynihan called for national planning to address future challenges from Ireland’s ageing population.
