Indian Supreme Court dismisses rape charges against man, calling complaint a retaliation after marriage promises.
The Indian Supreme Court has quashed an FIR and chargesheet against a man accused of rape based on promises of marriage, ruling the complaint was likely filed as retaliation. The woman, a municipal employee, alleged a five-year relationship with her married colleague, an Assistant Revenue Inspector, who allegedly forced sex in March 2023 and then withdrew marriage promises. She filed an FIR four months later, after receiving a show-cause notice from her employer. The court found the timing suspicious, noting the accused had previously filed complaints against her. The bench led by Justices Sanjay Karol and Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh concluded the case appeared to be a retaliatory move, not a genuine report of crime, and therefore dismissed the charges.
